If you’re a Michigan CPL holder and travel often, you need to know where your permit entitles you to carry concealed across the U.S. This helpful guide lists the 38 states that recognize your Michigan CPL, allowing you to plan for safe and legal travel. Since state laws vary, it’s important to check each state’s specific regulations before carrying.
States That Recognize a Michigan CPL
All of the following states offer Michigan CCW reciprocity:
Alabama
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the state recognizes any valid out-of-state permit. Alabama also allows permitless carry, provided the subject meets all other legal requirements to own and possess a firearm. The state’s permitless carry law went into effect on January 1, 2023.
Alaska
Alaska Statute 18.65.748 honors concealed handgun permits from other states. While all other statewide rules apply, the reciprocity makes it easy for Michigan CPL holders to lawfully carry in Alaska. Alaska has broad permitless carry laws, which allow anyone 18 or older to open carry a firearm, and anyone 21 or older to carry a concealed handgun without a permit.
Arizona
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the state recognizes Michigan CPLs via a reciprocity agreement. Additionally, Arizona allows permitless carry for persons 21 and older. The state’s broad concealed carry laws simplify the legal guidelines for carrying a concealed firearm, provided you meet all other requirements.
Arkansas
The Arkansas Department of Public Safety honors CCW licenses issued in all other states, but gun owners are bound by Arkansas state law. Arkansas also allows constitutional carry for those who are 18 or older. Just be cautious when carrying your firearm on private property or in churches. Make sure to review the state’s specific restrictions before traveling with your firearm.
Colorado
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation recognizes Michigan CPLs as long as the following criteria are met:
- The issuing state recognizes a Colorado permit
- You’re a resident of Michigan
- You have a matching state ID or driver’s license
- You’re 21 years of age or older
- The permit is valid
Colorado doesn’t have a constitutional carry law, meaning you must possess a valid CPL from your home state. Additionally, the state has strict rules that prevent you from carrying a concealed firearm in schools and government buildings.
Delaware
According to the Delaware Attorney General, the state recognizes CPLs issued by any state that honors Delaware CCW permits. Michigan is one of those states. Delaware doesn’t offer permitless carry and has very strict gun laws. With that in mind, make a point of researching local requirements before traveling out of state with your firearm. If you violate Delaware’s gun laws, you could face criminal charges, despite the CPL reciprocity.
Florida
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services states that the Sunshine State has reciprocity with Michigan. Florida also offers permitless carry for individuals who meet all other legal requirements, and are at least 21 years old. Active duty military personnel can carry a concealed firearm without a permit if they’re 18 or older.

The state doesn’t have any caliber or magazine capacity restrictions for handguns. Overall, the laws are less strict than those in Michigan. However, it’s still important to brush up on local restrictions before traveling to Georgia with your firearm.
Idaho
According to the Idaho State Police, the state acknowledges all other states’ concealed weapons permits. While many states only recognize permits from jurisdictions that offer reciprocity, Idaho allows any valid CPL permit holder from another state to lawfully carry a concealed handgun, provided they also possess a valid ID from the state that issued the CPL. Idaho also allows those 18 or older to carry a concealed handgun without a permit.

If you have a valid Michigan CPL, you can lawfully carry a concealed firearm in Iowa. The state also allows permitless carry for anyone over 21 who can legally possess a firearm.
